It can influence how we feel about ourselves, our confidence and even how others respond to us.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good, enjoying compliments or changing something about your appearance because it makes you feel more confident.

The problem begins when looking good becomes something you need in order to feel good enough.

Bodies change. Beauty standards change. Opinions change.

Your worth doesn’t have to change with them.

Care about your appearance. Enjoy it. Change it if that feels right for you.

Just don’t ask it to prove your value.

What would change if you enjoyed your appearance without needing it to define you?

Growing up, I was naturally slim. Then my body changed, I moved abroad and gained around 10 kilos.

What hurt most wasn’t the weight, but the pressure around appearance — and how differently some people treated me.

After a few years of restrictive diets and weight cycling, I realised I needed a different approach. So I swapped fashion magazines for books and started learning about the science and psychology of food, movement, sleep and behaviour.

The six books in this carousel, together with self-hypnosis audios and mindset work, helped transform my relationship with food, my body and myself.

I still care about being healthy and fit — I just no longer make my body my worth.

There’s a difference between wanting to look a certain way and feeling that you need to look that way to be enough.

From the outside, the choice may look exactly the same.

What matters is what’s driving it.

Healthy self-esteem isn’t about rejecting beauty, makeup, fashion, treatments or wanting to feel attractive.

It’s about having the freedom to enjoy those things without making your worth depend on them.

So ask yourself:

Am I expressing myself through my appearance — or using my appearance to prove something about myself?

No judgement. Just curiosity.

Because beauty can be something you enjoy without becoming something you have to perform.

Sometimes a compliment doesn’t feel like a compliment.

After years of public attention around his weight, Jonah Hill asked people to stop commenting on his body — “good or bad”. He acknowledged that people meant well, but explained that it wasn’t helpful to him.

Why might positive comments feel uncomfortable?

Because when our appearance is constantly noticed, praised or evaluated, it can remain at the centre of how we feel seen.

This doesn’t mean compliments are wrong.

It means we can’t assume that commenting on someone’s body will make them feel good simply because our intention is positive.

You’re allowed to decide how you want your body to be discussed — and to set boundaries when you need them.

And it raises an important question:

If people respond differently to how you look, does that mean your value has changed?

Appearance can matter. We may feel more confident when we like how we look, and other people may notice or respond differently.

But attention, approval and worth are not the same thing.

Your appearance may change how people see you. It doesn’t change how much you are worth.

Other people’s opinions can influence us without having to define us.

When we’re repeatedly judged by our appearance, we can start seeing ourselves through other people’s eyes — seeking approval to decide whether we’re attractive, acceptable or simply enough.

But appearance never tells the whole story. We cannot know someone’s health,
struggles or wellbeing simply by looking at them.

Healthy self-esteem gives us a stronger foundation: internal validation, values and
boundaries.

You can care what people think without making their opinions your identity.
You can listen without automatically believing.

And you can set boundaries around conversations that don’t serve you.
